About relative humidity and air temperature

The above elements are critical if we refer to the desired, optimal state of comfort, so that the relative humidity shall have a value between 40% and 60%, and the air temperature in the room shall range from 20 to 22 °C. As the temperature rises or drops, the air capacity to retain water vapours shall change.

The rate of water vapours that are actually in the air, in contrast to the quantity of water vapours the air can fully absorb to the current temperature, shall mean the relative humidity of the air. The air cannot absorb unlimited quantities of water, due to the saturation limit, which means a maximum quantity of water that can be absorbed by air, which is the absolute humidity of the air.

 

The most common concerns occur when the humidity exceeds the 60% threshold. Therefore, the higher humidity is, the more various the concerns shall be, requiring immediate actions.

Concerns resulted from excessive humidity

Low humidity causes health concerns like throat and sinus irritation, colds and other infections, as well as deterioration of wood furniture that may shake, insufficient humidity for plants, fast dust sticking.

On the other hand, excessive humidity may cause:

​

  • Health concerns;

  • Occurrence of mould and its particular odour;

  • High thermal discomfort, increased fatigue, suppressed immunity;

  • Dampness;

  • Deterioration of wood furniture and floors;

  • Deterioration of painting;

  • Deterioration of books and other hygroscopic materials (that may absorb water);

  • Unpleasant odour of clothes;

  • Condensation.

Mould, for example, begins to develop when the humidity level is 70%, corrosion occurs when the level is 60%, viruses develop when humidity is higher than 80%, and allergies and asthma under and over the
40-60% range of humidity.

Dealing with concerns resulted from high humidity

Ordinary housework like cooking, showering, drying laundry on the radiator in winter season may cause humidity rising. However, activities carried out in large spaces for commercial or industrial purposes, as well as weather conditions may determine high values of humidity that impede achieving the desired results.

Air dehumidifiers help reducing and adjusting the air humidity in the residential and industrial areas.

 

Dehumidification by condensation is usually more efficient and cost-effective than drying by heating and ventilation, mainly because the air exchange in the room is eliminated. The repeated air recirculation by a dehumidifier reduces the relative humidity, ensuring fast drying.

 

The spaces or homes with consistent and seasonal high humidity (rainy seasons or periods) shall need a compressor dehumidifier. Nevertheless, when the humidity fluctuations are small, for short periods, like housework, the most recommended is the thermoelectric dehumidifier (Peltier), with lower energy consumption but less effective.

Choosing the right dehumidifier

To choose the right dehumidifier, you shall know:
 

  • the current humidity level in the area (it may be measured using a hygrometer),

  • the temperature in the respective area;

  • the surface / volume of the area;

  • the causes leading to the occurrence of high humidity.
